Arias & Algorithms: Hiring Lawyers with AI

Artificial intelligence is changing legal recruitment, but perhaps not in the way some people expect.

In a recent conversation with Cullen P. Haynes on Business LIVE, Jenn Little, Founder and Managing Director of Insource, discussed how AI is changing the way law firms identify and engage talent, why traditional recruitment models are evolving and where technology should stop and human judgement begin. The episode,โ€œArias & Algorithms: Hiring Lawyers with AI,โ€ explores what this shift could mean for legal recruitment.

For Jenn Little, the dividing line is simple: AI should help firms find talent. People should decide who to hire.

AI is particularly effective at searching large amounts of data, identifying patterns and surfacing lawyers who might otherwise be missed. Rather than requiring someone to understand complex search filters, technology can help firms describe the lawyer they are looking for and quickly identify a relevant talent pool. But finding someone is only the beginning of recruitment. [

Technology cannot properly assess ambition, judgement, leadership potential or whether someone is the right long-term addition to a team. Nor can it build trust, communicate why a firm represents an exciting career opportunity or develop a relationship with a lawyer long before a vacancy exists. Those remain fundamentally human skills.

That becomes increasingly important as recruitment moves away from simply responding to vacancies. Jenn Little argues that firms increasingly need to understand their talent market all the time: where expertise is developing, who is moving and what capabilities the firm may need next. The firms with the greatest advantage may not be those spending the most on recruitment, but those that understand their talent market best.

In the full conversation, Jenn Little and Cullen P. Haynes also discuss agency recruitment fees, proactive talent pipelines, AI and bias, retaining New Zealand lawyers, developing junior lawyers and why the first move in legal recruitment will increasingly be a search rather than a recruiter brief.
